Ice Climbing is a special activity both physically and mentally. Climbing on a vertical ice requires a serious workout for the whole body such as core, arms and legs. Staying on the ice requires concentration for route finding. When you overcome fear and get a solid workout, you will be surprisingly satisfied!

What is Ice Climbing?

Ice climbing is an exhilarating adventure sport where you ascend these frozen walls using ice axes and crampons (spikes attached to your boots). At One Play-it, you’ll challenge yourself on beginner to intermediate routes featuring 15-meter and 25-meter ice walls.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or just curious about trying ice climbing, our experienced guides provide thorough instruction and support. All essential equipment is included in the tour price, so you can focus on the experience without worrying about gear.

Overview

A thrilling winter activity you’ll never forget in Nikko. Tackle on a 25m-high icewall to challenge your limit! First time for lice climbing? – No problem, we’ll teach you how to use the gears and manage risks on the ice step by step. We put ropes attached to your harness to secure your safety. You will be surprised how you immerse yourself in climbing a steep icewall. Let’s reach the top of the icewall and try several routes with us!

What to bring① Clothing
・Outer wear (Waterproof, windproof, and warm jacket and pants / ski wear)
・Inner layer (Warm fleece, down, or wool sweater)
・Base layer (Quick-drying T-shirts, long sleeves, tights)
・Compact down jacket for lunch break
*There will be waiting times – dress warm!

・Thick socks (synthetic preferred)
・Beanie (without pom-poms for helmet use)
・Gloves (Waterproof and warm)
・Sunglasses or goggles
・Spats/gaiters (if you need)

③ Shoes
・Sturdy waterproof trekking or mountaineering boots (Soft-soled shoes are not suitable)

④ Backpack (For lunch, drinks, extra clothes, etc.)

Participants are encouraged to climb frozen icefall. Sometimes we have snows and gust. We recommend to bring warm clthes.

Can I Join as a solo?

You are welcome to sign up as a solo, but the tour might cancel when no other guests sign up. In this case, we refund. This rarely happens but we want you to know there’s a possibility.

I have my own gears, should I bring them?

You can get a discount if you have your own axes, crampons and helmet. 5oo yen discount for each.

I’m a beginner. Can I join the tour?

Yes! You are in the right place. Many of the guests are trying ice climbing for the first time on our tour. We will do the safety talks, demonstrations and practice before starting climbing the main icewall. 

How far is the field from the meeting point?

10 minutes by car. It’s really easy to access and once we get to the field, a 5-minute walk takes us to the icewall.

Where can I store my luggage during the tour?

You can leave your luggages at our shop for free. If you have a small valuable item that is particularly nervous about it – just ask us.

How do I get to the meeting point?

The meeting point is near Lake Chuzenji in Nikko. From JR Nikko Station, take the Tobu Bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen (about 45 minutes). We will send you detailed directions and a Google Maps link after your booking.

Do the guides speak English?

Some of our staff can speak basic English. Even if you’re not fluent in Japanese, don’t worry — we make sure all guests can enjoy the experience through gestures, visual instructions, and friendly support. Many of our international guests have had a great time with us!

What happens if it rains on the day of the tour?

The tour will go ahead in light rain. However, in case of severe weather conditions like thunderstorms or strong winds, we may cancel the tour for safety reasons. In such cases, we will contact you in advance and offer a full refund or reschedule.

Is there a place to change clothes or use the restroom?

Yes, we provide access to changing rooms and restrooms at or near the meeting point. We recommend arriving a little early if you need time to change.

Can I bring my camera or smartphone during the tour?

Yes, but please be aware that there is a risk of water exposure. We recommend using waterproof cases or leaving valuables in a safe place. We also take photos during the tour and share them afterward.

Is it family-friendly?

The tour is suitable for participants aged 15 and above.
For safety reasons, we unfortunately cannot accept guests under the age of 15.
